This beautiful trail is located in Washoe Valley, just south of Reno. Jumbo Grade is a historic mule team route that was used in the 1800’s to move goods from Washoe Valley over the hill to Virginia City. Take a daytrip to Virginia City, which is an OHV-Friendly community. On your way, stop at the summit to rest and take in the amazing view. While in Virginia City, OHV riders should use the side streets and avoid riding on State Route 341, the Main Street in town.
The Jumbo Grade Road trail can be traveled in a high clearance 4WD vehicle, but steep grades and loose gravel may make it difficult to pass if the car is not outfitted properly. If you want to get off the main dirt road, there are many other existing roads and miles of single-track trail winding through sagebrush and pinyon-juniper forest. Trails are primarily hard-packed native dirt and can be very rocky or steep in areas. This area provides trails for all experience levels; from the open trailhead parking lot and adjacent play area, which is a great spot for beginners. The trailhead also includes an OHV play area and some fun motocross trails both adjacent to the trailhead, and also across the creek to the north.
All trails in this area are multi-use and are open to all types or recreational activities and is popular with equestrians. Remember to ride safe, use caution on blind corners, and respect other trail users.
Habitat Fun Fact!
The Jumbo Grade trail winds through several habitat types typical of Nevada, including sagebrush shrublands and pinyon pine/juniper woodlands. Amongst the pinyon pines, look for pinyon jays, a grayish-blue bird that can be found in these habitats throughout the west but have been experiencing population declines. In the spring, you can also see wildflowers like phloxes and primrose. Please make sure to stay on established roads and trails to avoid disturbing the habitat along Jumbo Grade.
