Description

The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1931 and encompasses 572,896 acres. Its main focus is on the preservation and restoration of native plants and wildlife, most importantly the pronghorn antelope. Other animals you may see while visiting are mule deer, greater sage-grouse and various migratory birds. Remnants of old ranches and civilian conservation corps buildings are scattered throughout the area such as at Kinney Camp, Thousand Creek Ranch and Gooch Camp.

There are no established trails within the refuge. OHV's and mountain bikes are permitted on established roads only. Be aware that most of the roads throughout the refuge are not maintained so pack an emergency repair kit just in case. Hiking and horseback riding are allowed anywhere throughout the refuge.

Aside from trails, wildlife viewing and boating are a popular activities. The best time to view wildlife and wild flowers are in the spring and summer months. Boating with electric motor boats is allowed on Big Spring Reservoir, Catnip Reservoir and Dufurrena Ponds. Fishing is allowed at Duferrena Ponds, Catnip Reservoir, Big Spring Reservoir and McGee Pond. Be sure to acquire a fishing or hunting permit through NDOW beforehand.

Other Information

Given that portions of the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge are near designated wilderness, only hikers and equestrians are allowed within the wilderness boundary. Motorized and mechanized use is only permitted on surrounding non-wilderness trails. Please be respectful of the wilderness boundary and only travel on designated roads and trails for your activity type. Horses are allowed and only certified weed free hay can be brought in.

For equestrian specific information visit Nevada Horse Trails.

Primitive campsites available throughout the refuge. Horse camping is only allowed at Badger and Fish Springs campgrounds. These campgrounds are equipped with horse corrals.

Cell phone service and other resources are rarely available throughout the area. Be sure to be prepared for any emergency.

Visit The Dirt for more information on OHV trails.
