Located just 12 miles north of Hawthorne, Nevada, the Walker Lake Recreation Area is the perfect place to spend the weekend and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. There are three major camping areas; Sportsman's Beach which has 32 campsites available for RV's and tent camping, Twenty Mile Beach, and Tamarack Beach which both offer primitive camping for tent and RV use. Plenty of recreation activities are available on the lake from water-skiing, motorized boating, swimming and paddling. A boat ramp is located at the Sportsman's Beach camping area.
Walker lake is not just considered home to many locals, but is also a major site for migratory birds and other animals. Snow geese, white pelicans, and snowy plovers are some of the most common migratory birds found throughout the Walker Lake area. Four-legged animals such as pronghorn antelope, wild horses and big horned sheep are also very common in the area. Due to the increasing salinity of the water, fishing is not successful.
